Reading the excellent Matthew Parris book 'Read my lips: the things politicians wish they hadn't said' one is reminded of this rather appropiate quote for our times:"In exceptional cases it is necessary to say something that is untrue to the House of Commons. The House of Commons understands that and has always accepted that"
