More cuts required
The Conservatives proposal to cut the number of MPs at Westminster is excellent. I have argued before that this would be the single most effective way of increasing the prestige and power of individual MPs vis-a-vis the government, something the last 25 years have shown is sorely lacking in the British system. The proposals do not go far enough. Congress gets by with about 535 members -- the UK Parliament has well over 1000, despite a population only 1/5th as large. The Conservatives should announce that they will cut the number of MPs to 300, and limit the size of the ministerial payroll to 60.
