Telegraph salaries
Bill Deedes tells us that in 1945, aged 32, when he returned from the war to work for the Daily Telegraph, was being paid £72 a month.Making comparisions with today is fraught with difficulties, but it works out at around £24,000 a year in terms of purchasing power. The country was much poorer in those days though. If his pay had kept pace with the growth in average earnings it would now be just under £65,000 a year, perhaps a better guide to his relative economic position.
