The Chancellor of that nice checked tablecloth
A colleague asked me what 'Exchequer' meant. I had no idea (actually, I lamely suggested perhaps it was to do with his writing 'cheques'!). Anyway the OED tells us the rather interesting background, which is:The name originally referred to the table covered with a cloth divided into squares, on which the accounts of the revenue were kept by means of counters.
