Something missing
The Economist reminds us of Labour's 1983 manifesto:
SOCIALISM in Britain died in 1983. Its demise can be dated to that year’s Labour Party election manifesto, branded “the longest suicide note in history”. This document combined ideological purity (highlights included the creation of a planning ministry, withdrawal from the European Community, exchange controls to stop capital fleeing overseas and unilateral nuclear disarmament) with a lunatic disdain for what voters wanted.
'A planning ministry'? Sounds vaguely Heathite, hardly the stuff of nightmares. Whatever happened to laughing at the bit where it talked of taking the banks into public ownership?

"Russia and Georgia on the brink of war"
Call Jimmy Carter! We really need Stephen Dennbest but I imagine the outcome will depend on whether the Federal Government intervenes. The Russians will presumably attempt a landing near Savannah, but that would be extremely difficult if the US Navy took part in the conflict. Maybe they'll just nuke them, but there's presumably a huge risk the fall out would hit Washington.
Update: Of course now they
are at war, and it doesn't seem very funny at all. 1400 dead? Did the Georgian's completely underestimate the Russian response?
